Real Time Analytics through Google Analytics

It’s been about four months since Google rolled out the new version of Google Analytics to the general public but knowing most Internet marketers you probably haven’t had a chance to take a look under the hood to see what’s going on.

Besides giving the UI a new look and feel Google has added a number of powerful features to the product set. One of the features that I find myself checking out frequently is Real Time Analytics. This series of reports measures what’s going on on your site in real time.

To access real time analytics in your new version of Google Analytics click “Home” on your top menu, then click ‘Real-Time (Beta)’ on the left hand rail. Once there you will be presented with a number of options that bring the geo-location, traffic sources, and content being browsed by users to the forefront. It’s also worth noting that this real time view does not use any filters you might have set up in your overall account.

Apart from being a pretty cool and new way of seeing what’s going on on site we’ve found the information provided by real time analytics useful in evaluating the effectiveness of social media campaigns to better gauge the impact of retweets, Facebook likes, and Linked-in shares for content that we’re actively promoting. I’d be curious hear how other Internet marketers are using this information to give the insight into their businesses.
