Google Shopping Launches New Design
Google has always prided itself on being a very minimalist site, with its home page of today essentially being a slightly tweaked version of its original page some 13 years ago.
The design philosophy has been contagious to its other portals, including Google Shopping which has kept the minimalist design since it launched originally as “Froogle”–until now:
In the new look, we see that above the fold are featured products inspired from their fashion site Boutiques.com with the first three features focusing on women’s fashion, until it gains a chromosome and links to their LCD collection, and closes with a link to their most popular coffee makers.
Right below are links to other popular Google products, followed by links to other popular products of theirs.
If the description above sounds familiar at all its perhaps because this new design is similar in style to the recent redesign to Shopping.com–and to a lesser extent Nextag and Amazon.com
Each have direct links to very specific product lines in the top half the page, which are followed by a more “plain” design links that lead to other popular pages. See below for yourself:
Otherwise we think the redesign is an interesting change in philosophy for Google as it lends itself to be more of a destination page rather than just a spot to do searches on.
Along with Google+, Google is trying to build more loyalty to its brand and give people reasons to check their site for updates–instead of just a site that directs people immediately away once they find what they’re looking for.
